Frederick Kemsley was born on the 18th November 1860 at Frankwell, Shrewsbury. His parents were John and Charlotte Kemsley (formerly Hawk). John Kemsley was originally from Kent and was a tanner journeyman at the time [birth cert].

His wife Mary Ann was born on the 20th June 1857 at Frankwell, Shrewsbury. Her parents were William and Louisa Owen (formerly Glover). William Owen was a joiner and carpenter [birth cert].

At the 1871 census Mary Ann at the age of 13 was in service to Richard & Mary Ann Clarke. Richard Clarke was a lawyer.

Frederick and Mary Ann married on 25th December 1882 at Saint Mary's Church in Shrewsbury. They both lived at Coton Hill, Shrewsbury. Frederick's brother Arthur Kemsley and Mary Ann's sister Selina Owen signed the register as witnesses [marriage cert].

At the 1901 census they were living at 1 Pilgrim Street, Stafford. Frederick's occupation was blacksmith. In 1901 their children living with them were Robert (17), Frederick (16), John (called Jack 14), Florence (12), Arthur (9), Gertrude (7), Walter (6), Lucy (3) and Edwin (1 month).

Florence married William Moore, Lucy married David Johnson, and Gertrude married Frederick Nicholls [informant Mrs G.A.Himona, daughter of Gertrude Nicholls].
