John Kemsley
& Charlotte Rose Hawk

"A John Kemsley, born in Kent in 1816, was a tanner who moved in pursuance of his calling first to Bermondsey and later to Shrewsbury. He and his wife Charlotte Rose had a daughter and six sons John, Stamford, Mark, Albert, Arthur and Frederick. Stamford (born in 1850) had a son James Stamford who called on me in London in 1936 when on a visit from Allerton, Liverpool, where he was a police fireman. He spoke of his uncles Mark and Frederick, at that time living at Stafford. His uncle Arthur (born in 1855) and his wife Alice Huthwaite had a son Arthur, born in the cathedral city of Lincoln in 1885, who emigrated to the United States, where he married Edith Scripps from Detroit and died in 1948."

- Sir Colin Thornton-Kemsley, 1980, "Kentish Kemsleys and Their Descendants", private publication, pp 18/19.

John Kemsley was actually born about 1919 in Hollingbourne, Kent [Source 1871 census]. His wife Charlotte was born about 1821 in Hadlour, Kent. In 1860 they were living at Frankwell, Shrewsbury, Shropshire. At the 1871 census John was a Tanner, and they lived in Atcham, St Chad, Shropshire. At that time their children living with them were Mark (18), Arthur (13), Frederick (10) and Rose (6).
